Tunnel of life (Tunel spasa)

Me near the sign. I visited the museum together with my father. Find more info here

My father at the entrance. Flags from the left to right: Army of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bosnia and Herzegovina (state flag) , Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina (state flag 1992-1996)

Map of Sarajevo during the siege.

At the beginning of the war, Sarajevo was besieged by units belonging to the Yugoslav People's Army (federal army) and Bosnian Serb paramilitary (in many cases organized by the nationalistic Serb Democratic Party)

"Sarajevo rose" was a nickname for the traces made by the shells.

Ammunition boxes containing mines and hand-grenades.

Beware of high voltage, dangerous for life.

Tools that were used for construction of the museum.

One of the "war-time improvisations"

Unexploded mortar shell that hit the house where the tunnel was constructed.

"Celebrities" who have visited the museum.

Soldiers inside of the tunnel.

Home made guns

Transport for eggs

Documentation relevant for the construction of the tunnel.

As the end was getting closer for the work for the realization of communication DB, it was important to prepare circumstances for its process of handing over as soon as the owner of the tunnel was concluded as well as responsibility for its security, exploitation and maintenance, and conclusion regarding usage rights.

Working equipment

Early skis for the tunnel.

Office equipment.

"The President's chair" during Alija Izetbegovic's visit to tunnel.

Model of the tunnel.

A soldier with his mother going through the tunnel.

From the construction work phase.

US military food packages.

Tunnel video.

Some personal reflections from the museum visit

1. Museum has a "unique style" status regarding history of the longest siege in modern time.

2. The introductory video about the siege did not contain subtitles on English. I hope it does today.

3. The texts about the siege should be as objective as possible. In presenting history the principle is to use descriptive expressions which are not validated by subjective values such as "good" or "bad".

4. In overall, the visit to the museum was very touching, learning-full and necessary in order to understand the wartime of 1992-95.
